ABSTRACT

Abstract Earias vittellaFabricius, 1794 (Noctuidae: Lepidoptera) is deliberated to be one of the most destructive pests of cotton and okra vegetation in the world including Asia. The pest has established resistance to various synthetic insecticides. The use of bio-pesticide is one of the unconventional approaches to develop a vigorous ecosystem without harming non- target pests and beneficial natural insect fauna. In the present study, the toxicity levels of Citrullus colocynthis seed extract have been evaluated against the populations of E. vittellaunder standardized laboratory conditions. The toxic effects of C. colocynthis on development periods, protein contents and esterase activity of the life stages of E. vittella were also evaluated. The toxicity levels of methanol, ethanol, hexane, water and profenofos were evaluated on the 1st instar larvae of E. vittella. LC30 and LC80 concentrations exhibited the effectiveness of methanol-based C. colocynthis seed extract against 1st instar larvae of E. vitella. The enhanced larval and pupal periods were revealed in treated samples during the comparison with untreated samples. The intrinsic rate of increase, net reproductive rate in the LC30 and LC80 concentrations exposed larvae remained less than the control treatment. Fecundity, the esterase activity and protein contents were declined in LC30 and LC80 treated samples as compared to the control. The present findings suggest that C. colosynthis extracts based botanical insecticides are beneficial, ecosystem sustainable and can be integrated with insect management programs from environment safety perspective.

ABSTRACT

BACKGROUND: Controversy surrounds regarding the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in oral precancerous and cancerous lesions in India where smokeless, tobacco consumption is rampant. AIMS: The present study was carried out with an aim to investigate the presence and type of HPV infection in oropharyngeal leukoplakia and to determine the association of HPV positivity with various patient and lesion characteristics. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Prospective case series. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of fifty confirmed cases of oral leukoplakia (OL), aged 18– 55 years were enrolled in the study. Specimens were obtained from the site of lesion. All the specimens were subjected to histopathological analysis and HPV‑16, 18 detection was done using real‑time polymerase chain reaction technique. RESULTS: Mean age of patients was 34.00 ± 8.85. Majority were males (62%), from middle social class (78%) and were educated up to graduation or above (54%). All the patients had one or more adverse habits (betel, chewing tobacco, smoking and alcohol) with mean duration of disease was 3.53 ± 3.05 years. Five patients (10%) had diabetes. Burning sensation (86%) and trismus (36%) were the reported complaints. Maximum were Stage II (50%), sized 2–4 cm2 (60%), homogenous (70%). Floor of mouth and tongue were most commonly involved sites (50%). Majority had mild dysplasia (58%). Acanthosis (66%), hyperplasia (62%), koliocytosis (40%), and keratosis (98%) were quite common. HPV (16/18) could not be detected in any specimen. CONCLUSIONS: The present study highlighted the fact that association of HPV with oral leukoplakia seems to be overestimated and needs to be reexamined with consensus Human papilloma virus (HPV) primers to detect HPV types with more valid empirical relationships.

ABSTRACT

Gunshot wounds are the second leading cause of death after road traffic accidents within young population in many countries which is the most productive section of the society. This study describes demographics, causative factors, intent, incident locations of firearm injuries and gun-related activities in which patients were engaged at the time of injury among patients treated in hospital emergency departments for unintentional firearm-related injuries. It is a prospective study conducted over a period of 1 year i.e. May 1, 2007 to April 31, 2008 and all the cases of Gunshot Injuries (GSI) that presented to the casualty department of Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College & Hospital (JNMCH), Aligarh, INDIA were analysed. The information of the cases was obtained from casualty records, history and examination of patient and photograph of the patient's wounds. Parameters studied are age, sex, site of wounds, weapon used, circumstances leading to injury and shot by whom. A total of 198 cases of firearm related injuries reported and 50 were found to be due to unintentional causes. These injuries are most common in children (28%) and most common cause was ceremonial firing (40%). Head and neck region is most commonly affected (34%) followed by trunk (30%). Most frequently used weapon is shotgun (50%). Firearm injuries are one of the emerging causes of unintentional injuries to children and youth. This study suggests that efforts should be made to limit unsupervised access to firearms, to promote safe storage of firearm and apart from strict licensing law, medical assessment is recommended.

ABSTRACT

Background: Use of irrational and unnecessary antimicrobials remains common in the developing countries. The present study was conducted to evaluate the use of antimicrobial agents in the tribal district hospital of Andhra Pradesh India. Methods: In this retrospective study, 200 hospitalized cases from medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology and paediatrics departments were randomly selected. Results: Most common diagnosis was febrile illness (15%) followed by gastroenteritis (10%) and malaria (8%). Antimicrobials were used in 57% cases. All the cases were managed by empirical treatment. Cefixime (40%) was the most common antimicrobial followed by ampicillin (32.50%), metronidazole (30%) and ciprofloxacin (26.50%). Use of antimicrobial monotherapy (41.67%) and 2 drug therapy (36.46%) was common. Conclusion: Empirical use of higher antimicrobial agents is routine and cheap antimicrobials like ampicillin are still most useful drugs in the region. There is a need of specific essential drug list for the region.

ABSTRACT

A 56-year old woman presented with headaches and nasal congestion secondary to bilateral ethmoid osteomas and she made a full recovery following endoscopic resection. Paranasal osteomas are common, benign, encapsulated tumours that are often asymptomatic, but may present similarly to rhinosinusitis and occasionally cause complications depending on their anatomical location. Bilateral ethmoidal osteomas, however, are a rare occurrence and have not been previously reported in the English literature as far as the authors are aware. Ethmoidal and fronto-ethmoidal osteomas, like other paranasal osteomas, are easily diagnosed using computed tomography and are increasingly amenable to endoscopic resection. An evidence-based management plan is presented.
